A Slightly Different Quality of Light by Rageprufrock [Mar. 17th, 2007|05:31 pm]
Wrecked Fic

Title: A Slightly Different Quality of Light
Author: Rageprufrock
Rating: R

Category: Pre-slash, Gen
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: John Sheppard/Rodney Mckay

Author's Summary: This is how Rodney remembers it.

Reccer's Notes: Gorgeous. Just .Wow. When an Ancient artifact uploads John’s memories to Atlantis and leaves him empty, Rodney has to gather his whole life and try and put him back together.

Quote: John's first time flying is in a helicopter over an army base. Rodney sees the tiny, boring houses John has always known grow inward, turn into tiny dots, and for a second his breath catches the way John's did, his heart pounds and his skin flushes, blood rushing to the surface for more contact, more weightlessness, and he goes dizzy and light. Rodney--for just a moment--understands, and he cannot help but to press his palm against the screen of the console, to try and touch the sky John remembers in his bones and his skin, stretched out like the most perfect infinity just within reach.

"The Towers On The Heights Reach To Heav'n's Own Blue" by Minervacat (R) [Mar. 16th, 2007|11:35 am]
Wrecked Fic

Title: The Towers On The Heights Reach To Heav'n's Own Blue
Author: minervacat
Rating: R

Category: Gen
Fandom: Stargate

Reccer's Notes: If you could write the summary to the fic I would be least likely to read barring it being the last thing left on the internet, this might very well be it. And yet I am going to rec this because it's just that good – though I still have no idea why I read it in the first place.

Prompted by a series of emails between Sheppard and Mitchell, life on Atlantis takes a decidedly more "sporty" outlook. While there's a lot of talk about sports, it's not at all necessary to understand the specifics to understand. If you actually understand sports, it's just that much better, I'm sure. I'm sure you could also read slash, perhaps even some het if you tried hard enough, this is very much what I would consider a gen story. Overall it's a nice mix of humor and character development.

General O'Neill was in Colorado Springs over Thanksgiving and he made me watch the Army/Navy game with him. Do the terrorists win if I admit that I don't give a flying fuck about Army/Navy? -- c.m.

>> Boston College sucks.
McKay's sister sucks.

"Heart Like a Wheel Means Racecar Dreams" by Thea (NC17) [Mar. 14th, 2007|11:41 pm]
Wrecked Fic

Title: Heart Like a Wheel Means Racecar Dreams
Author: thassalia
Rating: NC17

Category: Het
Fandom: Farscape
Pairing: John Crichton/Aeryn Sun

Reccer's Notes: A piece that fits easily into season 2, though vague enough on actual plot (hey, it's NC17 after all) to be suitable for those still in season 1. It handles characterization superbly, shifting from Aeryn to John's point of view without compromising flow or readability. It also carefully sidesteps the sickeningly sweet, which would have pulled it out of character, and like the show itself, leaves you somewhere between contentment and wanting more.

Quote: Aeryn passes him a foodcube as he sits down on the table, body angled so that he can see D'Argo and press his foot to her thigh at the same time. That's John, she thinks, making a circle with his body, expanding himself elsewhere so that he's never alone. A few weeks ago, on a sunny planet with a sharp breeze, he'd drawn geometric shapes in the dirt for a couple of kids. Drawn a circle and a tangential line, and she feels like that, bumped up against his arc, pressed to the curve of his will and presence.

Zoh-onna Omote by Losyark (PG-13) [Mar. 13th, 2007|10:07 am]
Wrecked Fic

Title: Zoh-onna Omote
Author: losyark
Rating: PG-13

Category: Gen
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: None, Miko Kusanagi
Author's Summary:

In Japan, it is not too much to say that everything is about appearances.

It is a habit cultivated over a life-time, and not one easy to break.

Reccer's Notes: A beautiful fic about masks, both literal and figurative, culture, appearances, and one very awesome woman.

"The Best Portion" by Pierson (NC-17) [Jan. 21st, 2007|09:42 pm]

Title: The Best Portion
Author: pierson
Rating: NC-17

Category: Het
Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis
Pairing: Teyla Emmagan/Carson Beckett

Author's Summary: That best portion of a good man's life/His little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love.

Reccer's Notes: A long, well-characterized Carson/Teyla fic with a good plot that really shows, to me, why they would be so good together.

Lessons by Allison (PG) [Jan. 20th, 2007|10:49 pm]
Wrecked Fic

Title: Lessons
Author: Allison
Rating: PG

Category: Het
Fandom: West Wing
Pairing: Josh Lyman/Donna Moss

Author's Summary: A friendship provides a basis for dealing with other relationships as well.

Reccer's Notes: This is the way fanfiction should feel; soft around the edges and full of anticipation. I recently re-discovered this fic, not having read it for two or so years, and was just as enchanted as on the original read-through. It's simple, it's not particularly angsty, but it provokes emotions in a pleasing and comforting way. Love should be like this, only perhaps without the inevitable international crises.

This fic isn't perfect, but what fanfiction ever is? I think it's also part of a series, but I've read it many times and just now realized that, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you can read it as a one-shot.

A Beautiful Lifetime Event by shalott [Jan. 17th, 2007|08:51 pm]

Title: A Beautiful Lifetime Event
Author: astolat
Rating: R

Category: Slash
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay

Author's Summary: Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.

Reccer's Notes: I was a little wary about this fic after reading the first paragraph or so, but it sucked me in and stole my soul. This one has it all, ladies: sly, subtle humor, some great lines, and a fantastic, realistic emotional undercurrent. I quote:

"And Rodney -- " Elizabeth turned, "You're pro-life and I didn't know? I must have been misled by the I dig Pro-Choice Chicks t-shirt you were wearing in the lab the other week."

And . . .

"But he'd seen enough tabloid headlines screaming in the airport to be very, very glad he lived in another galaxy: things like, Team Orgies! Shocking Photos Reveal The Truth! and Samantha Carter: I Had A Secret Alien Love Child!, not to mention O'Neill and Daniel Fight Over Carter! and Carter and Daniel Fight Over O'Neill! and O'Neill and Carter Fight Over Daniel!"

A long read, but definitely worth it.

"Slouching Towards Bethlehem" by Mrs. Hamill (NC-17) [Dec. 14th, 2006|09:55 am]
Wrecked Fic

Title: Slouching Towards Bethlehem
Author: Mrs. Hamill
Rating: NC-17 (not given by author, but I'll say so for violence and sexuality and mature themes)

Category: Slash
Fandom: Stargate SG1/Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay

Author's Summary: It was a day just like any other when it all went to hell.
Reccer's Notes: This fic and its sequel attempt to write the end of SG1 and SGA. Including the situation with the Ori, the wraith, and Atlantis' eventual secession from Earth. Almost all of the main players are here and they are put to good use. As the author says "If SG1 is really cancelled, this is what I'd like to see on SG:A-- not that we will!"

Quote: Rodney remembered it was a Tuesday, because that was the day they always submitted their weekly report to Earth. He remembered being on his fourth cup of coffee for the day and thinking about the work he still had to do in his lab. He remembered knowing the Daedalus was due to arrive within a week, bringing more coffee and chocolate, toilet paper and personnel. He remembered talking to Sergeant Campbell and Elizabeth and Sheppard as he waited for the report to compress.

And he remembered seeing Campbell dialing Earth, only to have it fail.

The universe paused. "What just happened here?" Sheppard had asked quietly.

"Dial again," Elizabeth had said, sharing a glance between the four of them.

Campbell had dialed again, and again, it hadn't gone through.

Rodney remembered blinking, remembered the creeping sense of panic making his throat tight.

"The Only on Holidays Affair" by Rosemary (NC-17) [Dec. 23rd, 2006|05:59 pm]

[Tags|, , , , , , ]

Title: The Only on Holidays Affair
Author: Rosemary
Rating: NC-17

Category: Slash, Holiday Fic
Fandom: Man From UNCLE
Pairing: Illya Kuryakin/Napoleon Solo

Reccer's Notes: Even if you don't believe in celebrating the holidays, this fic will make you glad for them and feeling fuzzy inside. A look at the development of Illya's and Napoleon's relationship over the course of three Christmas, this story builds their friendship, partnership and eventual love believably and with romantic power. The scene where Illya sings to Napoleon in the dungeon is especially poignant. Rosemary definitely ranks high on my list of MUNCLE writers, and this may be her finest effort.

Quote: "Sounds...good..." Solo mumbled. "Know...any...Christ-mas...car-ols?"

"Just one I learned while in Paris. It's called the Coventry Carol." His deep voice strangely sweet, Illya proceeded to sing Solo the haunting melody.

In his present state, translating the French lyrics was beyond Solo, but the sound of his partner's voice washed over him, drowning out even his wretched breathing.

They must have presented quite a picture, lying there tangled together like lovers in the gloomy, medieval cell, with Illya singing him to sleep as if he were a child. Solo found the strong, clear voice oddly reassuring, lulling Napoleon like a mother's lullaby.

Almost of their own will, Solo's heavy eyelids finally sank shut. More secure in that powerful embrace than he could ever recall feeling as an adult, Napoleon gave himself over to the sleep his body so desperately needed.

Part of him knew that there was a very good chance that he might never wake up again, but he felt so safe at that moment that he didn't really care.

"Legion the Things I Would Give to Oblivion" by Auburn (NC-17) [Nov. 26th, 2006|12:05 am]
Wrecked Fic

[Tags|, , , , , , , , ]

Title: Legion the Things I Would Give to Oblivion
Author: Auburn
Rating: NC-17

Category: Crossover, threesome, slash
Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis
Pairing: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay/Teyla Emmagan, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay

Author's Summary: Spiraling down. There are a lot of Wraith and the Daedalus is just one ship.

Reccer's Notes: Okay, we won’t even mention the love I have for this woman’s work. Auburn's Atlantis is often times dark, dangerous, and so very real. She pushes her characters and readers to the edge and isn’t afraid to not have a happy ending.
